There’s more cabaret rock theatrics than good old fashioned rock‘n’ roll, as ‘Helter Skelter’ builds a delicate orchestral crescendo into a frantic explosion of sinister vocals underpinned by a soft drum and bass rhythm quite apart from the original psych-pop elements of the track. But then of course, they’d rather produce innovative interpretations than inferior copies and the album is perforated with imaginative new compositions assembled to perfection It is all bonded by the influential figures that sparked the creative process who haunt the tracks in theirtraditionallycontemporary heartbeat. ORGANART Album of the week - March 2008 Some serious avant music makers including acclaimed pianist Katia Labeque, David Chalmin from the excellent Dimension X and contemporary composer Nicola Tescari. Familiar lines and riffs cut in to all kinds of soothing, gentle, jarring composition. The Beatles, iconic figures...., woven in to contemporary avant musical assembly and orchestral stabs and all manner of high-art spiky chamber jazz and other rock – the results are thrilling. Melancholic passages are disrupted as we go back to the bottom and up to the top, challenging piano outbursts, sinister impressionism, inventive focus and all pulled back in to shape by the familiar frame of Beatles songs – all kinds of energies and modern musical traditions colliding as one wonderfully stimulating whole. It works, it works on so many levels – most of all it just works as a rewarding piece of modern musical art to get lost in and enjoy. Wonderfully good for you. EXPERIMUSIC.COM - 8/10 March 2008 ...a unique re-composition of Beatles tracks which are nestled amongst new compositions composed by this avant-rock collective This innovative enterprise has been undertaken by Katia Labèque (an unconventional pianist from a classical background to whom Miles Davis dedicated two songs), David Chalmin (from sci-fi avant-rockers Dimension X), and contemporary composer Nicola Tescari and joining them are a whole host of underground superstars including Massimo Pupillo (Zu) .. a psychedelic blender of warped sound effects, slightly out-of-key instrumentation and a very tangible level of visceral energy. ......a cracking reconstruction of some of ‘The Beatles’ most endearing and hypnotic tracks and endless pleasure CLASSICA On savait la pianiste Katia Labèque proche du jazz fusion du Mahavishnu Orchestra de John McLaughlin, mais cette fois, elle dépasse le cap du classique avec un album totalement atypique : B for Bang, Across The Universe of Languages. Autour de Katia (pianos), David Chalmin (guitare), Nicola Tescari (piano), ), Massimo Pupillo (basse) revisitent de manière iconoclaste le répertoire des Beatles. Rien de conventionnel dans cet art de la reprise : nous sommes ici à mille lieux de l'interprétation sage et disciplinée. Tout virevolte dans un maelström de réappropriation de bribes de thèmes et de mélodies, refondues dans un style bigarré, survolant tous les genres, rock, jazz, électro, classique... ... une perle rare dans un océan d'objets conventionnels, une merveille dont on savoure la délicatesse des outrecuidances et le chahut crâneur. : du grand art, à coup sûr. MIDI LIBRE ...une lecture nouvelle, moderne et - on atteint là les confins de l'extraordinaire - originale d'une douzaine d'incunables des Beatles ! Le régal devient bonheur avec la reprise de Happiness is a warm gun, méconnaissable, lifté façon rock new-yorkais, esthétique Velvet Underground. Plus loin, Katia Labèque reprend au piano le riff historique de Come together, puis la ligne de chant, et c'est somptueux. ..... fulgurant duo piano léger, guitare saturée de Golden slumbers (sur Abbey road). Et puis, les merveilles absolues : Dear prudence limite drum'n'bass, I'm the walrus avec une Katia Labèque très percussive, Helter skelter où, dans un fracas de dissonances sublimes, la même se révèle fille de Jerry Lee Lewis et, enfin, While my guitar gently weeps, qui voit la six cordes doucement sangloter sur l'épaule d'un piano lui aussi en larmes. Zappa aurait sûrement aimé cet hommage populaire plein d'outrages savants (et inversement). Le public, en tout cas, lui a fait un triomphe. IL RESTO DEL CARLINO Un affascinante esperimento attorno alla musica dei Beatles. Della quale è stato conservato il tratto essenziale, ovvero la carica innovativa che è stata immersa nel nostro tempo... I Beatles erano presenti in un viaggio inusitato all'interno di differenti visioni della musica, liberando un'energia incredibile... La diversa provenienza (musical e geografica) dei protagonisti coinvolti basta già a spiegare l'originale alchimia in grado di spaziare dal jazz, al rock e all'elettronica con pari impeto e creatività. OCCHI APERTI Ferrara Musica Essere spettatore, di una sperimentazione è un evento importante; lo si può affrontare in modi diversi, parteggiando per la novità, oppure rifiutandola più o meno decisamente... essere spettatore di una sperimentazione vuol dire essere testimoni potenziali di una grande rivoluzione (B for "Big" Bang, nel nostro caso). Da sottolineare la toccante interpretazione di Julia, ad opera del chitarrista e vocalist francese David Chalmin, dimostrazione che si può stupire senza strafare. Alla fine i Beatles sono diventati un pretesto, non un leit motiv, ma un punto di partenza per l’esplorazione dell’universo dei linguaggi musicali, insomma un’operazione sofisticatissima, che non ha quasi mai perso di vista la musica ed il pubblico, generando un fascio di emozioni contrastanti ma profonde. Questa sofisticatissima super band a cavallo di tutto, generi, e timori, vede tra gli altri al pianoforte Katia Labèque, alle tastiere e all’elettronica il compositore Nicola Tescari ..... un linguaggio potente e inedito.
